More than a motto, Truth and Service are key parts of this institution’s identity, where more than 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students study in excess of 130 areas of the university’s 13 schools and colleges. Spanning 256 acres and perched on a hilltop in northwest Washington, Howard University’s historic main campus is only blocks from U Street and two miles from the U.S. Capitol. You’ll find several historical buildings on the grounds as well as an art gallery featuring more than 4,000 works.
A historically black university, Howard University has placed a strong focus on inclusivity and equality since its founding in 1867 by Civil War hero General Oliver O. Howard. Today the institution ranks among the most prominent producers of the nation’s Black professionals in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, nursing, architecture, religion, law, music, social work and education.
